Ushering in 2016 with UBER services

Being back in Penang and taking in the December wind certainly does wonders for the soul!

However, one of the most frustrating problems which I have quickly realised is traffic congestion and the lack of parking spaces in malls and popular hangout spots, which will definitely be made worse during this festive season and in areas pertaining to the celebrations : Queensbay Mall, Gurney Drive and Karpal Singh Drive are the popular ones I know of.

As per yearly tradition with my family,  I'll be ushering in the New Year at Straits Quay, and thankfully with Uber, I'll be able to focus on the celebrations and save myself the hassle of looking for parking spots & peace of mind from landing myself with a traffic summon. Unlike the previous years,  I'll also be able to let my hair down and party.. and ultimately, not worry about the initial rush of getting out of the parking lot as early as possible after the final surge of fireworks, for fear of getting stuck in more traffic..

What's more, Uber is really convenient : Pick-ups are always reliable and you can check for the driver's location and estimated arrival time from the app itself. For those worried about personal safety and for better meet-up coordination, the option to share your trip and ETA with your friends is readily available. At the end of your ride, you wouldn't have to fumble in your wallet/purse for cash to pay the driver as everything is charged directly to your credit/debit card linked to your Uber account. In a nutshell, beat the traffic and hassle in parking, while your uber driver takes you around in style!

Sounds good, right? Here's how YOU can engage in their services too!

Here's how to redeem this offer :

  1. Download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Sign up with your details & link your credit/debit card
  3. Once your account has been activated, you're ready to go!
To add to the excitement, you can use my promo code (ILUVPG7) to be entitled to a FREE one-time ride worth RM25. *Valid up to 31st Jan 2016. T&C apply.*

FOCUS ON CELEBRATING AND NOT ON PARKING!

Have fun & Stay Safe!

Kindness Kills : The Aftermath

There are two sides to every story and as some of you are aware, a certain story that has been ongoing with myself and a particular individual affiliated with concertkaki.com is about dishonesty. (Link to story)

It's no secret that he's been speaking to other individuals, giving his own version of accounts as a few parties have approached me (I quote Miss V :"Helping a friend worth helping") on the matter. His narration or description of events may not be accurate, so do allow me to clarify; and as much as he'd like to give an account of his side of the story, I have every right and reason to believe that I'm not the only one he has done this to.

Allegedly, it has been revealed to me that Person A has worked together with him before, for some time prior to this and according to her narration of accounts, she's also had to fork out huge sums of money to "help" pay for his expenses such as trips, accommodation, F&B, phone bills, clubbing etc.

Also, certain parties have approached me about how he used to/are still harassing them/their girlfriends and how he's always adamantly insisting that he's not at fault for his wrongdoings, which certainly says a lot about said person's character.

Kindness Kills .

Let me begin by clarifying this : I truly advocate keeping one's private life private.. but sometimes.. I think being too kind in life makes one a pushover. Or.. at least, makes other people think that you are. To prevent further untoward incidents happening to other poor girls, I've decided to share this ..

Update : 27/11 11:21PM

Attaching proof of his "invitation" .

I would also have to clarify that he "owns" the website, but it is not a legally registered company.

Anyways I'm gonna keep this as factual and short as possible , mainly because he doesn't deserve my effort in typing so much .. here goes :

#CafeHopKL : Fluffed Cafe & Dessert Bar

A fairly new addition to the multitude of cafes in Taman Paramount , Fluffed left a rather lasting impression.. and a strange longing for their affogato long after I'd left.

Pic taken from Fluffed FB page

On one of my weekend hops with some new friends, we visited this place after lunch at Prologue & Awesome Canteen. From there, it's a fair distance, so it's better to drive..heh.  Thankfully, ample parking was available.

Their crispy fluffy waffles paired with rose latte (non-caffieneated) are quite the treat for a rainy day , and I daresay their rose latte has more flavour than merchant lane's rose honey milk, but each to their own, eh?

Alice in Wonderland - a combination of lavender & blueberry.
The big bad wolf - charcoal waffle topped with earl grey ice cream , my personal favourite. ; and a peek at their rose latte.
They also have a few other waffles on their menu :

My Two Cents : Social Media is not Real?

I just took my IELTS speaking test yesterday , and this became a topic of discussion with the examiner , because she asked me a short question of my opinion on a recent "viral topic online". I didn't have much time to discuss this with her, but it gave me some time to collect my thoughts of the incident.. and so I've decided to pen this down & elaborate this a little further .
I'm sure most of you have seen this video by Essena - (update : as she's removed her account , I'm  linking a mirror upload)
Personally, the only key takeout for me in her video.. Is that she urges people not to be defined by numbers, and to not let numbers define one's self worth. That, I absolutely agree. I respect her courage, but for me .. the content or how one portrays themselves is entirely up to the content creator. I understand why she's upset and is calling herself fake , but hey.. If you're not enjoying the journey, you're probably not gonna love the outcome.

There are people who make it a goal to be internet famous and what have you , and when they get there, they really are over the moon about it ; or when people attain "accidental fame" , they're just genuinely happy because people are sharing what they love . I guess the point is to not let it consume you .

Moving on, I'm not here to urge everyone to be real, but to take what you see online with a pinch of salt.

Yes, nothing you see online is worth being jealous over ; neither is asking someone how they get so many likes/followers,  bickering about how the engagement is organic/paid for ; stealing other people's content and so on will do yourselves or said person any good. But social media has become a huge part of our lives , whether we like it or not.

There are so many posts circulating around , BTS(behind the scenes) photos of how instagrammers take their food shots , how staged photos are.. of truth & lies etc etc.. But hey. People share an affection for aesthetic beauty.. In simple terms, everyone loves beautiful things, regardless of culture.

We've always been encouraged to put our best foot forward, to try and look respectable and presentable to others and so on.. It would only seem natural that we eventually tried to fulfill our "perfect life" fantasies on Instagram or any other social media, for that matter.

I've seen how people talk about how others would love to see them fail, how people love hearing about mishaps and how sometimes they're afraid to share things when they're upset or feeling down.. Has our world really become as such? Where we're always expected to be flawless and perfect.. And at the slightest sign of your outer walls crumbling.. You must immediately recover and continue smiling? I quote Justin Biebs.. " It’s like they want me to be perfect, when they don't even know that I'm hurting ".

Many matters are quickly sensationalized, and the eventual fact is that most times , those people bear the brunt of cyber bullying for any form of  "fame".

For me, as long as you're clear on what you want in life and you've no regrets, do what you wanna do and achieve a level of success that makes you happy. You've got nothing to prove to other people (except maybe your parents or anyone who's lent you a hand during your journey). Just don't be the kind of person that spends time building & deliberately trying to portray that "perfect life" ; and then complain about how everyone keeps saying they "have it all" and "they don't know how hard it is for me".. because it's not worth it.

In all honesty, I love social media, but not the drama that comes with it. It has been a great platform for me to connect with so many other people (cafe hoppers, bloggers etc etc).. and it's been a source of inspiration as well . When i get tired of it or when I feel it consumes too much of me, I disconnect.

Everyone has their own opinions on how things should be done, but keeping to the topic here : weather or not social media should be used to promote environmentalism, veganism.. weather it's all about numbers .. just remember this - mass media has always been an influence (think magazine ad placements, tv commercials..) in how we dress, society's standards etc..

As long as you're secure in yourself and you believe in what you're promoting, you have the ability to change people's lives ; and if you think that people shouldn't be doing product placements on instagram, or they should really post "real stuff" like how messy their bed is or if you enjoy seeing pictures of people documenting their daily lives, that really is up to you as well. Just try not to hate on other people for doing what they would .

Do what you love, Do what you will , But keep the balance.

Hot Assist - Personal Protection and Lifestyle Program for Ladies

With crime rates on the rise , I find myself becoming more reluctant to venture outside as incidents such as snatch thefts and robberies happening in urban cities like Johor Baharu,  Klang Valley , Penang. It's easy to feel vulnerable and unsafe because crime can happen anywhere.

Almost every single day you’d see news regarding crime shared on social media. Snatch theft can happen anywhere and to anyone – a pedestrian walking by the roadside, a driver stopping to pump fuel at a petrol station, even a diner happily having her meal at a restaurant.

Here’s an attempted snatch theft in Sunway.

Here’s an incident in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Snatch theft in Johor Bahru.

Here’s an incident in Malacca.

While rob and run incidents are even happening in busy and upscale neighbourhoods with police beat bases barely 100 meters away. Here’s what happened at The Social along Jalan Telawi 3 in Bangsar Baru recently.

Even the Malaysian government is expecting it to rise in the near future.
Crime rates could increase over the next two years as the economy slows down, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said. -  (http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/putrajaya-expects-crime-surge-as-economy-slows-down#sthash.jLvftI8i.dpuf )

It’s gotten so bad that even the US Department of State has issued a warning to its citizens in Malaysia:

“There has been a noticeable increase in crime in Kuala Lumpur in 2014, including several reported assaults and robberies, sometimes involving weapons. Petty theft, particularly purse snatching and pickpocketing, and residential burglaries are the most common crimes committed…”

There’s nothing much you can do about it except not going out... but that’s not very practical.

This is a violent incident that happened on 17 October 2015 that’s currently going viral on Facebook. Crime does not only happen by the roadsides..

Have you noticed how the girl did not want to let go of her bag even after being hit repeatedly? She suffered injuries to her jaw and teeth.

These situations are all too familiar.. but imagine if there was a program to protect you and your belongings, so you can just let go and prevent bodily injury in such a situation knowing that your loss will be covered?

Well here’s some good news for you, because Hot Assist, which is powered by the Card Protection Plan from the United Kingdom has launched a new personal protection and lifestyle program in Malaysia.

Rob & Run Assist is a lifestyle program to protect you in case unfortunate incidents occur,  while giving you great lifestyle benefits such as well!

This program provides immediate assistance for snatch theft and (outdoor) robbery victims. As most ladies have their wallet, car keys, and mobile phone in their bag, when robbed, they will often be left feeling very helpless and lost. With protection by Hot Assist, you need only remember one (1) phone number to call for assistance.

With just one call to 1800-888-HOT (468), Hot Assist will block access to all registered credit and debit cards to prevent their usage, while the Emergency Taxi Service will be dispatched to take the member to the police station, hospital or home.

Hot Assist will also reimburse members for loss of personal belongings, documents and personal effects as well as hospitalization and medical expenses.

#HealthyLunchboxReview : Simply Green Salad

Hi guys! I'm back again with more reviews of Healthy eats in KL - this time, Simply Green Salad.
A small update on life - I'm currently on Kayla Itsines's Bikini Body Training Guide , or in short, BBG 1.0 . However, prepping meals (and getting round to cooking them) can be quite taxing , and with so many travel plans coming up, I'm not keen on stocking up my pantry.. so the opportunity to review them popped up just in time !

A cosy little eatery in Frasers Place, KL founded in 2014, they also provide online pre-orders & delivery services. Their ordering process is pretty straightforward & really mobile friendly, so on days where i'm just too tired to power by my mac, I basically just do everything on my phone .

But let me give you a quick run through on how to order on the web, first.

Clean & well thought out designs are always pleasing to the eye :D
First up , the ala carte menu. Pre-determined salad choices, but still highly customisable . Just pick and choose your options such as the complimentary garlic bread, salad dressing (mixed in or separate ) and pick from the optional add ons such as juices , hot soups which are also available separately.

Bitten By The Travel Bug : Tokyo (Day 1 & 2)

Hello peeps!

It's October already.. that's a few more months to the beginning of a new year !

It's been another one of those eventful months , I embarked on a totally unexpected solo trip to Japan  and I decided to extend my trip because I wanted to make the most out of it. :D

My only regret was that I wished that I had documented my solo day out better.. But that's one of the hardest things to do when you're travelling alone in such a busy city.. plus it's hard to walk around with a selfie stick/go pro and trying to take pictures with a bunch of shopping bags.. If you understand :p

But I did plenty of Snapchat updates ! So if you do follow me there you'll see firsthand that I had quite a happening day :p

Day 1
managed to catch the last few rays on sunlight!
As I arrived at night (around 10pm), most of the shops were closed.. and I decided to take a taxi (which turned out to be crazy expensive! Lesson learnt - taxis in Tokyo will burn a hole in your pocket T.T )

Gotta love convenience stores in Tokyo, I got hungry and was a little worried I wouldn't be able to find food.. but there were sandwiches & bentos available .. so my dinner was well taken care of!

But first, let's talk accommodation. This was my first experience with AirBnb (so many firsts on this trip!) and I chose this quaint little studio apartment in the Setagaya district owned by an awesome host (Sayuri).

Great view apt. 5min from Shibuya - Apartments for Rent

Apartment in Setagaya, Japan. studio type apartment fully furnished, 10th floor and above, view of Tokyo Tower and Sky Tree, 5 minutes to Shibuya, located in Setagaya-ku Tokyo. The access map with photos will be sent to you after receiving your reservation. We offer quite and... View all listings in Setagaya
I cannot emphasise this enough : make lots of inquiries when it comes to Airbnb because you need to find out which suits you best - regarding the area , nearby transportation & convenience stores/food.

I'm a rather meticulous planner. I need to have every single detail down pat before I start my trips, so this was rather unorthodox for me because I never really planned anything much (How to plan? Plane tickets were bought less than a week to go.. heh. )Thankfully , my overall experience with Sayuri had been awesome . If budget is not an issue, I'd highly recommend that you stay here. Prices are seasonal , but mine was about 89 euros per night.

  Day 2

..was spent exploring cafes and shopping.
My trusty guides for the day (kindly provided by Sayuri) & Essentials (Pocket Wifi from Visondata and a spare phone containing apps essential to my survival :p)
My initial plan was to focus on Shibuya because I didn't want to overwhelm myself..
but then I realised that with Ultra Japan coming up I wouldnt have much time to explore anyway.. So I decided to follow my instincts and ended up in Shibuya, Shinjuku & Harajuku ( the three main shopping heavens, if you will)

So the stores i frequented were (but are not limited to) Commes Des Garcons for my sister and her friends ; Les Merveilleuses Laduree makeup & checking out the famous Takashimaya times square in Shinjuku.

It started to pour halfway through.. and I was so thankful that I brought an umbrella along.
no shame because everyone does it anyway.. and besides, they're transparent!
I was wandering rather aimlessly, but I guess lady luck decided to smile on me because I stumbled upon one of the "must try" cafes - Streamer Coffee Company, where I had the best Mocha I'd ever tasted. Trumps KL & penang cafes.. sorry guys!
A photo posted by Gillian Ong (@gilly214) on

I'd never really expected to get caught up in the rush hour crowd ( I guess the time difference never occurred to me ) and so I went along with it . I arrived at Shinjuku shortly after , and promptly got attracted by the sight of macarons..
With nothing much to do after exploring shopping malls.. I decided to head to Harajuku instead.
I did go there with a purpose.. to find Laforet Harajuku (where Les Merveilleuses Laduree was located) :p I must say japs are really passionate about their work.. I had the most fun & engaging experience purchasing makeup ever.

Slowly, I got rather hungry ..  and Rickho (I was texting her the entire time) asked that I go try Ichiran Ramen. So i made a u- turn back to Shibuya and had my dinner..
A photo posted by Gillian Ong (@gilly214) on
( a super fun experience, will be documented in the next post )  and afters, hopped on the train and went home . One thing I could never get used to in Tokyo is that their stores close really early (8pm in Harajuku & Shinjuku ;  9pm in Shibuya - as told by a local).. so there really isn't a lot to do after nightfall.
and so i was basically sitting at home doing this.. :p
Well.. Except for the part where i got hungry and the 24 hour bento store next to the apartment was calling to me.. :p

But i'd done enough damage for the day, anyways.

More soon,

[Review] OpenSnap - an app for foodies

Being an avid foodie can prove to be a bit of a hassle sometimes, and the most common first world problem :”where/what to eat?” isn’t exactly a great conversation starter, right? Well, I’ve always liked looking through pictures on Instagram because with the help of my café-hopper friends/foodies, I can discover new places to dine! But sometimes, taking screenshots or writing down places can clutter up one’s phone and be quite troublesome when it comes to looking for addresses and opening hours.

So, I’m here to introduce – OpenSnap, an online platform & app designed to enable users to upload foodie pics & search nearby restaurants for good food , as well as leave their own reviews and ratings!

I’ve been using this app since 2014(when they first launched, I believe) and recently, they’ve rolled out additional features & enhancements. The app is available in most major cities & districts in Asia so you never have to worry about not being able to find food.

Flawless Within Minutes

Hi peeps :)

I'm pretty sure all you girls out there are no strangers to waxing.. yes? I've always been a loyal customer to my waxing parlour .. but the thing is .. it's such a long break in between treatments (as the hair has to be at least 6mm long) and I can't wear sleeveless tops ! Woes of being a lady , indeed. There are tons of hair removal options available to us , from D.I.Y. shaving,  epilation to more professionally done waxing and IPL, each requiring a certain level of pain tolerance.

That being said,  I was recently invited over to eternel to review their DPC (Dynamic Pulse Control) Permanent hair removal treatment . Eternel is currently the first clinic in KL to have this technology .

Just a little background on DPC (Dynamic Pulse Control) to see what makes it so special :

DPC is also a form of light therapy , which helps reduce up to 90% of hair on the treatment part. Unlike general laser treatments , DPC offers three pulse configurations in one system: Smooth Pulse, Long Pulse and High Pulse , offering customisable configurations according to one's skin, guaranteeing the best results which IPL(Intense pulsed light) technology cannot fully overcome. In a nutshell, DPC hair removal is a clean and relatively painless treatment.
The benefits?
  • Provides a semi-permanent hair reduction solution
  • Lightens pigmentation such as the pesky dark patches on your underarms
  • Helps to reduce the occurrence of ingrown hair substantially
  • Can be used on almost any area of the body: legs, bikini line, back, underarms, arms, upper lips and etc
  • Safe and painless (fast, too. )
Walk-through :

Review : 5-step Deep Layer Treatment @IMP Salon

Hi peeps !

I've been (trying to) grow out my hair , it's currently almost halfway past my waist, hip-hip hurrah, but it's common knowledge that hair needs some maintenance to make it look all pretty and retain its shine, yes? Well.. with Malaysia's scorching hot sun & long hours in air conditioned rooms, my hair isn't exactly in tip top shape and desperately needed some love.. so I was really pleased to be invited to try Molto Bene's latest hair treatment called "Deep Layer-  5 step system". In short, it helps lock and retain hydration inside and outside of your hair.

The aim of this treatment is to effectively give moisture to highly damaged hair to repair both the inner & outer hair components, with a final water-repellent coat on the surface . Coloring or perming , and in short, chemical treatments can damage our hair pretty badly , and this Deep layer system aims to carefully repair this with salon use products, and paired with home care leads to strong beautiful hair .

A quick crash course on the product, further explained to me by Eddy during my treatment in the salon :

Movie Review : Paper Towns

Hmmm..Haven't done one of these in a while.

Last Tuesday , I won a pair of tickets to a #NNPremiereScreening (NN= Nuffnang , if you don't already know ). Instantly entered because wanted to watch the movie(of course) , I love all of John Green's books.

So , right after work & dinner, le bf got us both to Paradigm Mall where I went to redeem our passes!
A photo posted by Nuffnang Malaysia (@nuffnangmy) on
And grabbed some in-movie snacks. Oh, I should mention . The crowd was crazy  , and we didn't really get good seats even tho we think we were there pretty early , the lines were quite long, too ! So, note to self, GET THERE EARLIER! :p

It didn't stop us from enjoying the movie , though, & Spoilers up ahead! You guys might be glad to know that Paper Towns is not the tear-inducing book/movie “The Fault in Our Stars,” was.

Review : Urban Retreat Spa @ 1 Mont Kiara

Hewo peeps! It's been a rather hectic week , with long road trips (don't even get me started on the raya jams!), and I was feeling rather off and cranky today, possibly due to work stress & a pinched nerve since last week. So, I decided that I needed a massage , and a really good one.

I jumped on Google & did some research, and clicked on the first thing I came across - this list on foursquare.
Bored and a little desperate, I went through a few and finally decided on one closer to home - Urban Retreat at 1 Mont Kiara mall. The positive feedback on foursquare made me perk up a little( especially one from Tammy, founder of the butterfly project! If there's someone who knows her stuff about beauty,it's definitely her!) and a 4.4 out of 5 from 60 reviews on FB? That's a really good score !

So, mind all made up, I called them to enquire.  They recommended that I try out the deep tissue massage after i explained what I was looking for ;  and to reap the full benefits, i went for the 90 minute session for RM169. Secured myself a 6pm slot , and off I went!  Took advantage of a free ride from #ubericecream codes yesterday, too! :p (all in the name of self-pampering *insert princess emoji*)

I was pretty excited because I could finally relieve myself of the discomfort that the dreaded pinched nerve was putting me through.  Their outlet was easy to find because I spend quite a lot of time in 1MK mall, heh. It's right beside Thai Odyssey.

#CafeHopKL : I am 80's Cafe

Hi peeps,

How many of you here are born in the roaring eighties?

Not me, but I had the pleasure of attending a food review along with a few other bloggers in a cafe that offered me some interesting insight to that era.

It's not in an area that I'm familiar with - SS4, but there's a rather interesting story behind the location. TK Dong, owner of the cafe told us that while he was driving in heavy rain, he came across this place that was still easily discernible .. that's why he decided on this shoplot. Ample parking space, guaranteed because not many shops are occupied yet.

At first sight, the cafe may seem a little small..

but there's more space in the basement !

As you pass the stairwell , you'll see an abundance of decorative items from old times.
The basement is definitely more spacious compared to the top floor, suitable for gamily gatherings or events .
Colourful decorative pieces adorn the wall .

My Vika Nail Tea Party

Hewo peeps!

I consider myself a pretty low-maintenance girl, and I've always been a fan of gel manicures - they're quick, they're practically bulletproof, and the shiny, glossy color won't budge for at least two weeks (heck, my gel manis have lasted me a month or two in the past! )  The only thing is, with work and all, I've never had time to get my regular mani/pedi sesh:(

But.. VIKA is here to help ! Founded in Korea, fairly new in Malaysia, VIKA's nail jam(s) are basically gel stickers which you can use to DIY your very own gel manicure! It's so easy even guys can do it ( you'll see why I say that later *smirks* ). Boasting various styles ranging from loud & bright colors, to demure girly designs , changing your manicure designs could very well be as simple as changing clothes in the future :p

Special thanks to TAP by seeties & VIKA for having me at the nail tea party held last weekend.

Each blogger was given a gel nail kit -
which consisted of a mini LED Lamp , Nail Tonic , Gel Nail Coat & Cleansing Wipe
