[Movie Review]

Enjoyed a free midnight showing of City of Bones yesterday, thanks to Crazy Potato & TGV Cinemas.

First of let me start off by saying that i'm a big fan of the book series. Naturally, I was excited about the film but at the same time, my past experiences with novel adaptation films always disappointed me, which was the case with Twilight & Hunger games, so i went into the screening with low expectations.

Let me just say that it was flawed in some ways, but it was so much better than what I had expected!

*contains spoilers*

Plot Summary : Set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray (Lily Collins), discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother (Lena Headey), Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures. Based on the worldwide best-selling book series. - Sony Pictures

Missing Parts - i doubt you would understand much if you never read the book:
I think the script was a major issue with the film, a lot of things weren't explained well or even at all: Idris, the notion of parabatai, and the other Mortal Instruments, the circle, weren't explained at all! The explanation of the steele(to some it was just using a big pen to mark themselves =.=), the Silent Brothers, and runes were done poorly. Never in this movie did they mention fairies. When Isabelle is naming all the Downworlders she misses out Faeries, which is a big part in the next book. I wonder how they're going to explain that; Simon didn't turn into a rat ( i was kinda hoping for that.. ) and most importantly.. WHY WASN'T VALENTINE BLOND?!

Kay.. enough with the "fan rant"
Godfrey Gao as Magnus Bane

Things I loved -
  1. The cast - Major girl crush on Lily Collins, and Godfrey Gao made me drool! <3
  2. THE MUSIC! -  good score throughout, especially the Hotel Dumont scene
  3. Them clothes! somehow i absolutely loved how they were styled- like sexy goth dancers who wear lethal jewelry.
  4. No cheesy vampires! They actually looked scary!
  5. Sense of humour in the books was kept in the script

Goofy Parts :
• When Clary freezes the demons with her rune she made. Why didn't they kill them all while they were frozen? They had to wait a good 20 seconds just staring(and talking) at them and THEN decided to sneak past them even though they were frozen. They basically just stood there waiting for them to wake up. Is there logic there?
• Johann Sebastian Bach was a shadow hunter? Seriously?Hahahaha.
• Did anyone else notice that the birthday cake/apple disappeared? maybe it just rolled off the stairs!
• I didn't know they had iPhone 5..(or 4)back in 2007 (read the book!) . :p

Overall : I know that the book was rather long, and it had to be condensed into 2 hours. Due to this, a lot of the characters weren't developed properly, the history of shadow-hunters and many of the characters, were rushed and weren't explained well. Too many things were happening at once and it kinda felt that this was made for book fans, else you would end up feeling confused with who's who ( like my boyfriend & sister) I kinda felt that it would have been better as a television series? But still, it was still an amazing experience.
